June 8, 2011 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Current Fayetteville SwampDogs pitcher Cory Kimes and three former SwampDogs were selected on Tuesday, day two of the 2011 Major League Baseball Entry Draft.
Kimes, out of the University of Illinois, was selected in the 18th round (pick 568) by the Minnesota Twins.
The selection of Kimes continued what had already been a very good week for the junior lefthander. On Sunday, he pitched the Illini to a 7-5 victory over Cal State Fullerton in an elimination game during the NCAA Regional. He threw seven innings and allowed just four runs, three earned, to earn the win for Illinois.
He joins Shawn Pleffner as members of the current SwampDogs roster to be selected in the draft thus far.
Three former SwampDogs were also chosen on day two of the draft, all from the 2008 SwampDogs team. Jason King, a third baseman from Kansas State, was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the fourth round (137), Kevin Quackenbush, a pitcher out of South Florida, was taken in the 8th round (263) by the San Diego Padres, and Nick Fleece, a pitcher out of Texas A&M, was chosen in the 13th round (415) by the Cincinnati Reds.
Day three of the 2011 MLB Draft is currently underway.
