Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
WILMINGTON, N.C. - It was more of the same for the Fayetteville SwampDogs Wednesday night. Fall behind, come back late, and let the bullpen shut it down.
The SwampDogs scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning, then withstood a ninth-inning rally to defeat the Wilmington Sharks, 5-4 at Buck Hardee Field in Wilmington. Fayetteville improved to 7-1 on the season - 3-1 against Wilmington - while the Sharks fell to 3-6.
Eric Grabe reached base safely four times, behind a single and three walks, and scored two runs. Billy Urban went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Joe Vaskas and Danny Gesick also drove in a run. All three players are now tied for the team lead with 6 RBIs on the season.
Cory Kent (2-0) walked one and struck out three in his three innings of work to earn the victory. Cody Davis worked through a shaky ninth, allowing a two-run homerun to Kenny Bryant and a one-out double to Casey Allison before striking out Emilio Pagan and Alex Freedman to end the game and earn his third save.
Derek Brooks started the game for the SwampDogs and did not factor in the decision. He threw five innings, allowing five hits and two runs - one earned - while walking none and striking out four.
Jacob Mayers led the Sharks offense by going 3-for-4 with three singles and an RBI. Stephen Vaughan (0-1) took the loss, allowing five runs in 7.1 innings while walking four and striking out four.
The SwampDogs continue their four-game road swing tomorrow night with game three, as they head to Morehead City for the second time this season. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. The SwampDogs return home to J.P. Riddle Stadium on Saturday night against Florence, and the first 500 fans 21 and up will receive a free pint glass courtesy of R.A. Jeffreys Distributing and Budweiser. Gates open at 6 p.m., with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
