Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners bounced back on Sunday from a Saturday defeat against the Traverse City Beach Bums, getting another quality start on the mound, this time from Josh Kimborowicz, and a consistent offensive effort to beat the Beach Bums 6-4, claiming the series at Rent One Park two games to one.
The Miners got started right away with their bats, with Craig Massey leading off the game with a double. He moved to third on a groundout and then scored on an RBI single from Nolan Earley to make it 1-0 in the first inning. Massey would triple to lead off the third inning in his next at-bat, with Earley also coming through with another single to drive him in and make the score 2-0 Miners.
Meanwhile, Kimborowicz (1-0) was perfect with five strikeouts through three innings. A leadoff double by Jeff DeBlieux and a sacrifice fly later in the frame by Jose Vargas got the Beach Bums on the board and made the score 2-1, but Southern Illinois tacked on two more that same inning against Michael Shreves (0-1) on an RBI single by Toby DeMello and an RBI fielder's choice by Massey, making the score 4-1.
Kimborowicz would take it from there, pitching six innings of three-hit, one-run ball with one walk and seven strikeouts to earn the win in his Southern Illinois debut. The Miners would support him with two more runs in the seventh off reliever Kyle McKay on an RBI single by Alex De Leon and a sacrifice fly by Aaron Gates. Traverse City scored three runs combined in the eighth and ninth, but did not seriously threaten the Miners' lead for the final margin.
Massey led the charge offensively, going 2-for-4 with a double, triple, two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base, while Earley notched a 3-for-3 night with a walk and two RBIs. DeMello also doubled as part of a 2-for-4 game with a run scored and an RBI to help the Miners improve to 2-1 on the young season.
Southern Illinois will have a day off on Monday before returning to the field at Rent One Park to host the Gateway Grizzlies for a three-game series beginning on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Edward Cruz will take the hill for the Miners against Gateway right-hander Vince Molesky.
