Richmond Kickers News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The Richmond Kickers (3-1-1) picked up their third-straight win Friday night, topping New England Revolution II (0-2-2) 2-1 at Gillette Stadium. Emiliano Terzaghi scored his fourth goal in five matches to open up the scoring in the 54th minute. Mayele Malango leveled it for New England in the 71st minute. 11 minutes later it was Ryley Kraft coming up with his first Kickers goal to seal the three points for Richmond.
Nine minutes into the match and the post denied the Kickers an opener. Emiliano Terzaghi won the ball inside the Richmond end of the field, pushing forward up the right flank. Mutaya Mwape had space on the left wing as Terzaghi switched up the play to the Zambian. He got to the endline and whipped in a cross to Luke Pavone on the six-yard box. His shot pinged off the post and was cleared away by New England.
Coming off a corner kick in the 12th minute, another near chance for the Kickers. Mwape played a short corner to Ryley Kraft, as he tried to play a cross in. Nicolas Firmino headed the ball out, right to the feet of Matt Bolduc. He moved quickly to float the ball into the far post to Pavone, as he mis-hit the ball and Revolution II could clear.
Another chance fell for Richmond from distance 15 minutes in. Bolduc controlled a pass from Pavone and quickly turned to Mwape on his left. He made a run towards the New England box. With no space for a shot, Mwape laid the ball off to Kraft. 20 yards from goal, Kraft let a shot rip that forced a save from Keegan Meyer.
The crossbar came to the rescue for Revolution II in the 25th minute. Mwape continued to control the left wing, this time cutting inside towards the New England box. A quick touch to his right got the ball to Kraft, who also played it quick ahead to Terzaghi. The Argentine found Bolduc to his right in space. He had the space and went for the shot that hit off the woodwork.
Pavone came close in the 51st minute. Mwape again finding the space on the right. He sent in a cross for Pavone to get a head on as he leaped in at the back post. The ball rose just high of goal, not missing by much.
Emiliano Terzaghi continued his hot streak to start the season, scoring the opener in the 54th minute. Scott Thomsen pounced on a loose ball to get it to Bolduc. The midfielder waited just enough to slide the ball through to Terzaghi, who made no mistake to find the back of the net for his fourth goal in five matches.
New England leveled the score in the 71st minute. Mayele Malango played a corner short on the left to Ryan Spauling. Malango made a run behind Spaulding to receive the ball. Getting into the Richmond box, Malango bent in a shot towards the far post for the tying goal.
Jonathan Bolanos came close to finding the go-ahead goal in the 77th minute. Bolduc controlled the ball in the center circle to get it up for Terzaghi. The Argentine chipped the ball forward for Bolanos. Shouldering off his defender, Bolanos was trying to go for a shot as Meyer slid out to deny the rookie.
Richmond jumped back out in front in the 82nd minute through a Ryley Kraft goal. Victor Falck simply played a pass to Ian Antley. He looked up and found Kraft primed for a far post run. Antley sent in a picture perfect ball that just needed Kraft to slide in to find the back of the net for the first time in a Kickers shirt.
The Kickers come back home to City Stadium next Saturday night, August 29 as they host the league leaders Greenville Triumph SC at 6:30 p.m. This match will be live on WTVR CBS 6.3 and streaming on ESPN+. A limited number of tickets are available now at RichmondKickers.com/Tickets.
