Richmond Kickers News Release
RICHMOND, VA - Thanks to the overwhelming support of the Richmond community, the Richmond Kickers were able to raise over $20,000 for the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund during tonight's exhibition match with the Virginia Tech men's soccer team. Nearly 4,000 fans were treated to an exciting night of soccer as the Kickers narrowly defeated the Hokies 3-2. Kickers midfielder Mike Burke notched the first goal of the night while rookie forward Ricky Schramm was responsible for a pair of second half goals. Virginia Tech leading scorer Patrick Nyarko leveled the score twice with goals in the 31st and 69th minutes.
The Kickers opened scoring tonight in the 23rd minute when midfielder Mike Burke carried the ball into the six-yard box, eluding defenders near the end line. Despite an awkward angle, he was able to slide a low shot to the far post for the first goal of the night.
The Hokies leveled the score eight minutes later when midfielder Kevin McFadden received the ball at the top of the box. Moving forward, he slid the ball to forward Patrick Nyarko who quickly chipped it into the open net, before Kickers netminder Ronnie Pascale could challenge.
Richmond broke the second-half stalemate in the 57th minute when midfielder Matt Watson intercepted a pass and put it through to rookie forward Ricky Schramm, who tapped it in for the Kickers second goal of the night.
Virginia Tech was quick to retaliate when Nyarko equalized for a second time in the 69th minute. On a breakaway, Nyarko, dodging two defenders, sent a long, low ball from the top of the box past Pascale, who came out to challenge, into the back of the net.
The Kickers notched the final tally of the night when Schramm ran onto a long ball, breaking through Hokies defense inside the six-yard box and finding the target in the 74th minute.
The Richmond Kickers would like to offer a special thank you to the following organizations for making tonight's event possible: University of Richmond, Clear Channel Richmond, US Soccer Referee Association, Richmond Times-Dispatch, WTVR - TV 6, WWBT - 12, WRIC - TV 8, Virginia Youth Soccer Association, Central Virginia Soccer Association, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond Kickers Youth Soccer Club, Richmond Strikers, FC Richmond, Chesterfield United, Virginia Tech Athletics and Richmond Hokie Club.
