Richmond Kickers News Release
RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond Kickers will host MLS opponent, Charlotte FC, at City Stadium in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Round of 32. It marks the first time since the 2015 season that the Kickers will host an MLS opponent in the tournament. Information regarding the date, time, and tickets will be issued in a later communication once finalized.
US Soccer's longest-continuously operating pro soccer franchise in the Kickers will meet one of US Soccer's newest professional franchises as Charlotte is currently in the middle of its inaugural season.
The Kickers reached the round of 32 after a dramatic extra-time winner from Emiliano Terzaghi whose left-footed strike in the 118th minute ended North Carolina Fusion U23's Cinderella run in the cup in the third round. Meanwhile, Charlotte's road to the round of 32 included a win at Richmond's USL League One rivals, Greenville Triumph SC. Charlotte earned its first-ever cup win 2-1, Wednesday night, after scoring a 105+1' go-ahead goal.
When Charlotte comes to town, fans will recognize one of the team's marquee players, Christian Fuchs. The Austrian defender joined Charlotte after a storied career in Europe that included playing a significant role for Leicester City when the team won the 2015-16 English Premier League Title.
The Kickers are seeking their first win over an MLS opponent in the tournament since the club made it to the semifinals in 2011 with a win over Sporting Kansas City.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is a single-elimination tournament designed to crown the top soccer club in the United States. The domestic cup tournament features clubs from all four professional leagues sanctioned by the United States Soccer Federation: Major League Soccer, the United Soccer League Championship and League One, and the National Independent Soccer Association, as well as amateur teams. The Richmond Kickers have won the cup once in their history, hoisting it during the 1995 season.
