RICHMOND, VA - (Monday, March 17, 2014) - The Richmond Kickers are pleased to host the University of Virginia for the fifth annual Pro-Am Challenge this Saturday, March 22. The Kickers final preseason test will kick off at 5:00 p.m. at City Stadium and tickets are on sale now for just $5.00 at RichmondKickers.com.
Following a tightly contested 2-1 win over Virginia Commonwealth University last week, the Kickers will face William & Mary in a closed-door scrimmage on Wednesday before hosting the Cavaliers in the preseason's showcase game on Saturday. Kickers newcomers George Davis IV, Hugh Roberts and Shay Spitz are expected to appear alongside a mix of veteran players, invited trialists and D.C. United loan players.
In advancing to the NCAA College Cup for the 11th time in program history in 2013, Virginia went 13-6-5 while reaching the ACC championship game and finishing the year ranked as high as fourth nationally. The Cavaliers return nine starters from that squad, including 93 percent of their scoring as well as three experienced goalkeepers in Calle Brown, Jeff Gal and Spencer LaCivita. The Cavaliers recently opened their spring schedule with a 2-0 win over the Kickers' USL PRO rivals Pittsburgh Riverhounds with Riggs Lennon and Richmond local, Todd Wharton leading the offense.
