Richmond Kickers News Release

Richmond, VA – The Richmond Kickers (8-2-2, 26 points) and Atlanta Silverbacks (3-5-3, 12 points) played to a 1-1 draw in front of a crowd of 3,658. Both teams scored early in the game; however, neither team was able to break the deadlock. The first ten minutes of play saw the only scoring action of the night as a goal by Kevin Jeffrey in the first minute of play was quickly countered by former Kicker David Hayes in the ninth minute.

The Kickers opened tonight's match with the quickest goal to start a match at home in the first 55 seconds of play. Richmond midfielder Mike Burke played the ball down the right side and crossed it to forward Kevin Jeffrey who was in scoring position just outside the eight yard line. Jeffrey flicked the ball into the low left corner for the first goal of the night.

Richmond could not hold the early lead for long as Atlanta retaliated soon after in the ninth minute. Silverbacks midfielder Gary Brooks raced down the right flank past two Richmond defenders into the Kickers box and found a wide open David Hayes at the back post. Hayes took advantage of the opportunity and knocked the ball past Kickers goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale for the equalizer.

The Kickers looked for the icebreaker in the 24th minute when Kickers forward Matthew Delicate won the ball in the air, which found Jeffrey just outside the box. Jeffrey passed the ball to Burke on the right side who sent a high shot, which ricocheted off the upper right corner of the crossbar.

Another close call came in first half stoppage when Burke sent a low, curling shot into the box at the top of the sixth yard line onto a running but tightly marked Delicate. Delicate tapped the ball with an outreached leg but Silverbacks goalkeeper Christian Fegler was able to smother the ball for the save.

The Kickers and Silverbacks traded opportunities in the second half but neither team was able to capitalize. Atlanta had a dangerous scoring opportunity in the 56th minute when Alex-Pineda-Chacon broke through the defenders and took a low shot to the right from 22 yards out but Pascale was able to smother the ball for the save.

Atlanta attempts by Hayes (55'), Adilson DeLima (56'), and Chacon (89') missed the target while long-range blasts sent by Richmond's Jeffrey (57'), Burke (58') and Sascha Gorres (87') could not break the stalemate.

After a four-game home stand, the Kickers take to the road for the next two weeks and return to the University of Richmond Stadium on Saturday, July 2nd to take on the Puerto Rico Islanders at 7:00 p.m.
