Khalif Mitchell Fined
May 14, 2015 - Canadian Football League (CFL) News Release
TORONTO (May 14, 2015) - The Canadian Football League announced today that it has fined Montreal Alouettes defensive lineman Khalif Mitchell for posts made on Twitter that are in violation of the league's social media policy.
"There is absolutely no place in our league for commentary used to divide or disparage others along the lines of sex, race, religion or sexual orientation. While we acknowledge that players have a right to hold and express their own opinions, in no circumstance do we condone activity or comments that are derogatory or inappropriate, putting the League's reputation in question - and we feel Mr. Mitchell's recent posts on social media have violated these principles."
- Jeffrey L. Orridge, CFL Commissioner
As per league policy, player fine amounts are not disclosed. Subsequent offences are subject to higher fines and possible suspension.
The CFL's Social Media Policy is as follows:
Our league encourages players to use social media, in keeping with our desire to be accessible to our fans.
All postings made to social media are treated as 'public' and are subject to the same discipline if a player or employee made similar comments through traditional media. If a player, team or league employee uses social media (which includes retweeting or reposting someone else's comment(s) to their own social media account) in a manner that may bring the CFL into disrepute, including posts that condone harassment, discrimination or violence, are obscene or sexually explicit, or divulge proprietary information or disparage the league, teams, officials, players, employees or fans, they will be subject to discipline from the Commissioner's Office.
