The Frederick Keys (28-34) defeated the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (29-32), 5-3, at Harry Grove Stadium Sunday night. CF Cory Keylor put the Keys ahead for good in the sixth inning with a two-run home run that scaled the scoreboard in right field.
The Pelicans started the scoring in the top of the third inning. With C Miguel Bernard on third base after a single up the middle, a stolen base, and a wild pitch, CF Henry Blanco hit a double down the left field line to score Bernard. Blanco would score later in the inning off of a single to right field by DH Brian McCann.
The Keys would get a little help from the Pelicans in the bottom of the third inning. Chris Carter scored on an error by Pelicans 1B Isaac Iorg.
Frederick added a second run in the bottom of the fifth inning. DH Chris Carter reached base on a fielder's choice and would score on a double down the left field line by LF Jacob Duncan.
The score was tied at two in the bottom of the sixth inning until CF Cory Keylor crushed a two-run home run over the scoreboard in right field. The home run was Keylor's 16th of the season.
The Pelicans added another run in the top of the ninth inning, but closer Tony Neal was able to shut down the Pelicans' comeback attempt for his team-leading 15th save of the season. The Keys were victorious, 5-3.
NOTES: Ryan Keefer pitched two innings of scoreless relief to set closer Tony Neal... Tony Neal pitched in the ninth inning and gave up two hits and one earned run, while striking out two... DH Chris Carter was 2-for-4 on the night with two runs and one RBI... Reliever Ryan Keefer pitched two scoreless innings, giving up three hits and three strikeouts... The Orioles announced today that former Frederick Key and current Baltimore Oriole Larry Bigbie will take part in a rehabilitation assignment with the Keys on Monday and Tuesday Night.
The Frederick Keys finish their series with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans Monday night at Harry Grove Stadium. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
