Kansas City Brigade News Release
KANSAS CITY - Sportexe, the exclusive turf provider for the Arena Football League and arenafootball2, today announced that Kansas City Brigade head coach Kevin Porter is the 2007 Sportexe Arena Football Coach of the Year. Porter joins previous Sportexe Coach of the Year winners such as John Fox of the Carolina Panthers and Sean Payton of the New Orleans Saints.
"It's really an honor to receive this with all of the talented and successful coaches in our league," said Porter. "This award represents a lot of hard work by our coaches, players, and staff. The season wouldn't have been such a success without their commitment. Thank you to Sportexe for this recognition and their continued support of Arena Football."
Sportexe, a global leader in the synthetic turf industry, has become synonymous with excellence and the Sportexe Coach of the Year award has become a respected symbol that showcases coaching talent while demonstrating the same quality, integrity and performance as the Sportexe brand.
Porter led Kansas City's second-year Arena Football franchise to a 10-6 regular season record after a 3-13 inaugural year, becoming one of only four teams in the 21-year history of the AFL to make a seven-game turnaround.
The Brigade played for the Central Division title in the final week of the season and hosted a home playoff game, becoming one of just 26 second-year franchises to reach the postseason among 62 franchises in the league's history.
"Coach Porter is definitely deserving of this award after a successful season," said Neil Smith, co-owner of the Brigade and Porter's teammate with the Chiefs. "With him the Brigade will contend for the ArenaBowl every year. We're proud to have a great teacher and leader as our head coach."
Porter once held the best record in af2 history at 45-27 before moving up to the AFL in 2004 as a defensive coordinator. Porter was named the first head coach of the expansion Brigade in October 2005. A third-round draft pick of the Kansas City Chiefs in 1988, Porter played five seasons as a defensive back with the Chiefs and New York Jets.
