Madison Ice Muskies News Release
Mitch Kerns coast-to-coast goal in overtime gave the Ice Muskies a thrilling 7-6 win over the Battle Creek Revolution Tuesday night at Hartmeyer Ice Arena.
It was Kerns second goal of the night who also added three assists for a five point night, four of which came in the third period or later.
"He sparked us, scoring the tying goal and setting up the go-ahead goal in the third," head coach Rod Davidson said. "Then scoring just a beautiful overtime goal. Four points in the third period and overtime combined is something special."
The Ice Muskies erased two three-point deficits before finally taking the lead with 4:45 remaining in the game when Kerns set-up team captain and Madison native Andy Cripps for the go-ahead goal.
The Revolution didn't quit, however. After calling a timeout with a minute left, Battle Creek pulled goaltender Chris Joswiak and 33 seconds later defenseman Rob Schweyer found the back of the net to force overtime.
The Revs had a number of scoring opportunities early in the overtime period, but after a turnover in the Ice Muskies zone, Kerns grabbed the puck and skated into the Battle Creek zone and across the left wing circle before crossing in front of Joswiak and putting the puck past his left arm to win the game.
After a three game homestand in which the Ice Muskies took five of six points to grab sole-possession of first place in the AAHL, they now head on the road for three games this weekend. Friday night the Ice Muskies travel to Evansville, IN before taking on the Chicago Blaze Saturday and the Chi-town Shooters Sunday.
