Kernels have big day in 16-2 romp over LumberKings

August 3, 2008 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels set a season high with 16 runs and tied two other season marks in hits and RBI in a 16-2 romp over the Clinton LumberKings on Sunday afternoon at Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Tyler Johnson and Carlos Colmenares each had 3 RBI, Hector Estrella was 4 for 6 with 2 RBI, and Julio Perez and Gabe Jacobo each had two doubles.

Kernels starter Trevor Reckling (9-4) allowed just two hits and struck out five over six scoreless innings for his ninth win of the season. The Kernels tied season highs in hits (17) and RBI (13) as Clay Fuller was 3 for 5 with an RBI.

Clinton starter Michael Kirkman (3-1) allowed seven runs (five earned) on seven hits over two innings in taking the loss.

The win gives the Kernels their third series victory in a row as they have won seven of their last nine games and improve to 22-20 in the MWL second half and 54-56 overall. Clinton falls to 22-21 and 63-47 overall.

After an off day on Monday, the Kernels open a four game home stand against the Quad Cities River Bandits on Tuesday at noon.
