St. Louis Steamers News Release

(St. Louis, Feb. 24, 2004) -- The MISL Commissioner's Celebration of Excellence dinner/auction at the Renaissance St. Louis Airport Hotel Grand Concourse Ballroom will spotlight the past, present, and future of St. Louis soccer. The Feb. 28 event is part of the 2004 MISL All-Star Weekend, which takes place Feb. 27-29 in the St. Louis region.

The first annual "Celebration of Excellence" gala will feature a reception and silent auction at 6 p.m. followed by the "Commissioner's Dinner" at 7 p.m. MISL Commissioner Steve Ryan will recognize the outstanding contributions St. Louis has made to the sport of soccer and will offer an update on the growth plans of the Major Indoor Soccer League. Dan Flynn, secretary general of the U.S. Soccer Federation, will serve as the keynote speaker, and local soccer authority Bill McDermott will be the night's emcee. Flynn grew up in St. Louis and was a soccer standout at Saint Louis University in the 1970s; McDermott, also a St. Louis native, played on the outstanding SLU men's soccer teams of the late 1960s under legendary coach Harry Keough.

Among the highlights of the evening will be the presentation of the Inaugural "Keough Awards" to Taylor Twellman and Lori Chalupny. Beginning this year, the Keough Awards will be presented each year to the outstanding St. Louis-based male and female professional or college soccer player. The Keough Awards recognize the outstanding contributions made by the Keough family to the sport of soccer on the local, national, and international stage. Harry Keough is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame, and his son, Ty, also excelled on the amateur, collegiate, and professional level.

Twellman, who grew up in St. Louis and attended St. Louis University High School, is one of the rising young stars in the MLS (Major League Soccer) with the New England Revolution. Chalupny, a St. Louis native who attended Nerinx Hall High School, is a standout midfielder for the University of North Carolina and the U.S. Women's National Team.

In addition to the Keough Awards, area youth teams will be recognized for their excellence during the past year. Tables are still available at several price levels for this special celebration of St. Louis soccer excellence.
