Kelowna Falcons Shutout Bellingham on Wednesday
July 19, 2012 - West Coast League (WCL)
Kelowna Falcons News Release
Kelowna, BC: Brandon Marris tosses his second consecutive shutout in the Kelowna Falcons 5-0 win on Wednesday night.
With his seventh win of the season Marris (7-0) becomes the only pitcher to win seven games for the Falcons in a single season. The mark also ties the all time West Coast League record.
After just two hits on Tuesday night, the Falcons offense gave Marris support early. Andrew Firth would double in the bottom of the first inning, eventually scoring on an RBI groundout by Greg Friesen.
Then in the third Friesen would smack a double off the wall to score Brock Slavin to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead.
Ultimately, Marris would take care of the rest. He would throw his second complete game of the year, scattering five hits and striking out four. Marris is off to the 2012 All Star Game in Walla Walla and has made a strong case to get the start for the East All Stars.
In the bottom of the seventh the Falcons would add three insurance runs. Slavin would bring home Jace Conrad with a single to centre, before Patrick Johnson smacked a two run double.
With the victory the Falcons (21-16) sit 1.5 games behind Bellingham (22-14) for the final playoff spot in the East Division. The two clubs will conclude their series at Elks Stadium on Thursday night as Cord Cockrill (5-2) gets the ball for Kelowna.
Thursday night is also Go Green night, as the Falcons will be wearing specialty GREEEN jerseys that fans will have a chance to win right off the players backs. Gates open at 5:30pm, first pitch at 6:35pm.
**Also attending the 2012 All Star Game: Kyle Pearson, Greg Friesen, Jace Conrad, Patrick Johnson, Jerry McClanahan, Cord Cockrill and Phil Maton.
