Keene Takes Care Of Business At Home, Defeats Newport 5-1

August 12, 2013 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Keene Swamp Bats News Release

After Newport blew Keene out of the water in Game One at Newport, the Swamp Bats answered back at Alumni Field in Game Two, defeating the Gulls 5-1 on Monday night.

The Swamp Bats jumped ahead right away in this one, scoring four quick runs in the first inning.

After back-to-back singles, Keene struck first on a wild pitch and a throwing error to quickly make it 2-0. Hofstra's Robbie Cafiero then stepped up and roped a 2 RBI single into left field to double Keene's lead to 4-0.

Newport got one back in the fourth after a solo shot from Timmy Robinson, but that is all that the Gulls would score against Keene's starter.

If this is in fact the last time Brian Hunter pitches for the Swamp Bats in 2013, he capped off his summer with a great start in Game Two.

The right-hander out of Hartford lasted 5.2 innings, allowing just one run on six hits and four walk, racking up nine strikeouts along the way.

The Swamp Bats tacked on one more run in the fifth after another Newport error allowed Cyprus College's Dylan Moore to score to make it 5-1.

Hunter gave way for Matthew Clancy, St. Johns, with two outs in the sixth. After getting the final out of the frame, Clancy went on to work a scoreless seventh and eighth innings, allowing just one walk along the way.

The closer James Connell then came on in the ninth to finish things up, and worked a perfect frame to seal the deal.

The victory evens up the series at 1-1. The Swamp Bats and the Gulls will battle one more time in Newport on Tuesday night to decide the NECBL champion. First pitch at Cardeens field will be at 6:35 p.m.
