East Kentucky Miners News Release
PIKEVILLE, KY. - East Kentucky Miners Coach Kevin Keathley has been tabbed as the guest speaker for the Special Olympics Kentucky Area 3 Spring Games to be held on Saturday, April 19 at Prestonsburg High School. Keathley, fresh off of guiding the expansion East Kentucky professional basketball team to a 26-22 regular-season record in its debut campaign and into the postseason, welcomed the opportunity to help open the 2008 Area 3 Spring Games.
"It's an honor to have the opportunity to be a part of such an inspiring event," said Keathley. "I'm eager to meet with all of the Area 3 Spring Games athletes and participants."
Both area and regional level competitions serve as qualifying events for Special Olympics athletes who wish to advance to state competition. Special Olympics is an international program of year-round sports training and athletic competition for more than one million children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics Chapters are established in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, the Virgin Islands, and American Samoa. About 25,000 communities in the United States have Special Olympics programs. Through the Special Olympics Model School District programs, public school districts include Special Olympics in their physical education curriculum and provide extracurricular and interscholastic sports to elementary and secondary students with intellectual disabilities.
