Kats Make Major Changes: Waive Bonner, Montgomery, Two Others

May 14, 2007 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Nashville Kats News Release

NASHVILLE- Amid a 4-7 start to the season, the Nashville Kats have waived WR Cornelius Bonner, DB Monty Montgomery, DL Hugh Hunter and WR O.J. Small announced Head Coach/Dir. of Football Ops Pat Sperduto.

The change comes after a disappointing start to the 2007 season in which the club felt like a shakeup in the lineup was needed in an effort to reach the AFL postseason. "We did what was in the best interest of our football team. Some of it had to do with cap reasons and some of it had to do with performance reasons but we did what we felt was the best thing to do for the organization," said Sperduto.

Bonner (6'0 188 Cincinnati) came to the Kats in 2006 after spending time with both the Las Vegas Gladiators and Chicago Rush. In 2006, Bonner played in all 16 games (13 starts) and in 2007, Bonner started all of the team's 11 games registering 65 catches for 968 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Montgomery (6'0 195 Houston) was acquired by the Kats in 2006 as he was claimed off of waivers. He went on to have a stellar 2006; leading the Kats in total tackles (79.5) interceptions (9) and pass break-ups (16). After starting the 2007 season on injured reserve, Montgomery returned in Week 5 and went on to register 49 total tackles and one interception.

Hunter (6'2 265 Hampton) joined the Kats in 2007 after spending time with the Colorado Crush, Indiana Firebirds, Milwaukee Mustangs and 1998-1999 with the Nashville Kats, respectively. Hunter played in the team's first thee games before spending weeks 4-9 on the injured reserve list and returning for the team's last two contests.

Small (6'2 218 Florida) signed with the Kats after spending time with the NFL's Tennessee Titans. Small never got on the field during his time with Nashville, spending all 11 weeks on the team's injured reserve list.

The Kats' next contest will be against the Chicago Rush, Saturday, May 19. Nashville competes in the AFL's Central Division, a talent-rich division that houses the past two ArenaBowl Champions (Chicago Rush 2006, Colorado Crush 2005) and added the Kansas City Brigade in a realignment change.
