Kansas City Current News Release
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City NWSL has signed multitalented veteran Mallory Weber to a contract extension. The agreement announced Friday will keep Weber in Kansas City through the 2023 season.
Weber played forward for most of her NWSL career. However, the 27-year-old from Novi, Michigan appeared as a defender, midfielder and forward in Head Coach Huw Williams' lineups this season.
Weber began her tenure with Kansas City NWSL playing on the wing during the 2021 NWSL Challenge Cup, then shifted to midfield early in the regular season. In her last four games, Weber started and played every minute at left back.
"Mallory's versatility has been key for us this season," said Williams. "Her field vision, speed and toughness are exactly what we are looking for on our back line and she has stepped into the role perfectly."
After her loan to Adelaide United of Australia's W-League, Weber joined Kansas City for the team's final Challenge Cup match against OL Reign where she contributed significantly, curling a score from 20 yards out in only the sixth minute of the match.
In the regular season, Weber appeared in 10 matches for Kansas City, totaling seven starts and over 600 minutes played. Since moving to the backline against the Washington Spirit on June 26, Weber has made nine clearances, blocked two shots and collected 10 interceptions. Her versatility is noticeable and she has the ability to create, with nine key passes completed and one assist thus far in the regular season.
After a four-year career at Penn State University in which Weber tallied 36 career goals, she was drafted in the second round of the 2016 NWSL Draft by the Western New York Flash. Weber was traded to the Portland Thorns in March of that year where she spent three full seasons.
In 2017, Weber appeared in 17 matches for Portland and scored one goal as the Thorns went on to win the 2017 NWSL Championship. She appeared in 14 matches for the Thorns in 2018 and one in 2019.
Weber signed with the Utah Royals midway through the 2019 season, and was one of 22 players transferred from Utah to the Kansas City roster for its 2021 Inaugural Season.
Weber and Kansas City NWSL travel to Oregon this weekend for a Sunday afternoon match against the Portland Thorns. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT and the game will be broadcast locally on KCTV5 and Sports Radio 810 WHB. Nationally, the game will stream live on Paramount+.
