Kalamazoo Wins NYE Shootout on Road

December 31, 2012 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings News Release

Johnstown, PA- The Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings were led by Taylor Burden and Kyle Gattelaro, whoeach scored in regulation and a shootout on Monday night, as they bested the Johnstown Tomahawks by a final score of 3-2.

For the second consecutive night, it was the Tomahawks who were able to spring out to an early lead on their home ice. Just more than sixteen minutes had elapsed in the first, when Mitch Kontny found a loose puck, and sent it into the back of the net for his 13th goal of the season, giving Johnstown the lead.

However the lead wouldn't last long, as Kalamazoo was able to strike right back with an equalizer, barely over a minute later. Burdenshot home his 10th goal of the season with under three minutes remaining the first to send the game to the intermission tied at one goal apiece.

The second period had all the makings of a typical North Division contest. Neither team was able to score, but there was no shortage of chances. The period was highlighted by a fast pace, physical play, and solid goaltending.

At the midway point of the third period approached, the Jr. K-Wings found themselves working with a man advantage. Gattelarogot the puck along the left-wing boards, moved his way towards the top of the circle, and fired a heavy wrist shot that lit the lamp for his sixth goal of the season. The goal broke the 1-1 stalemate, and gave the Jr. K-Wings their first lead of the game.

With fewer than four minutes to play in regulation, Johnstown was able to scramble and draw the game even at two's. Kontny was able to chip in his second of the game, and team-leading 14th, giving the Tomahawks second life in the late stages of the contest.

The third period wouldn't yield a winner, so for the third time in the last four games, the Jr. K-Wings would share a point with their opponent, and play overtime hockey.

The five-minute extra session wouldn't produce a winner either, so the two teams headed to a shootout. Goals from Robbie Payne, Gattelaro, and Burden propelled the Jr. K-Wings to a win to close out the 2012 calendar year.

The Jr. K-Wings will continue their season-long ten game road swing on January 4th, as they take on the Soo Eagles at 7:30 PM.
