Kalamazoo Victorious, Takes Over Second Place

March 16, 2013 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings News Release

Kalamazoo, MI- The Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings were led by stellar goaltending and a quick strike offense, as they were able to defeat the Jamestown Ironmen by a score of 3-2 on Saturday at the Borgess Health Rink inside Wings West.

The first period had all the makings of a typical North Division clash, as speed showcased the opening twenty minutes. The first nineteen minutes and thirty-two seconds of the first stanza had elapsed before Kyle Gattelaro was finally able to break the scoreless stalemate. Gattelaro's first shot was fended off by Jamestown goalie Joe Ballmer, but Gattelaro worked hard to fire his own rebound between Ballmer's legs and into the goal for his 12th tally of the campaign.

Period number two had the same feel as the one before, as the two teams continued their back-and-forth action through the second frame. Equalizing the score at one apiece was Jamestown's Victor Johansson, who rocketed a wrister into the top corner for his 9th of the year at the 8:55 mark.

Just fourteen seconds later, Robbie Payne intercepted the puck deep in the Jamestown end, drove straight to the goal, and was able to stuff it home past Ballmer for his team-leading 26th of the campaign. The goal would give the Jr. K-Wings a 2-1 lead that held until the break. It gave Kalamazoo a chance to improve their already impressive 23-2-0 record when leading after two.

Midway through period number three, the Ironmen were able to draw even yet again, as Joe Mottiqua was able to slam home a wide-open rebound past Kalamazoo goaltender Marcus Due-Boje. The goal for Mottiqua was his fourth of the season, and gave the Ironmen a chance to take their first lead.

However it was Kalamazoo who would score next, and it didn't take long. Just 52 seconds later, Taylor Burden stole the puck around the right wing side, pulled a nifty toe-drag around Ballmer, and shot home his 20th goal of the season. The goal gave Kalamazoo a 3-2 lead, enough to hold on for the victory and overtake Jamestown for second place in the division.
