Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings News Release
Kalamazoo, MI- Even without their leading scorer, the Port Huron Fighting Falcons scored five times en route to their 5-2 victory over the Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings on Saturday at the Borgess Health Rink at Wings West. The victory handed them sole possession of first place in the North Division.
The first period of play opened with the Fighting Falcons getting on the board first courtesy of Mike Moroso (7th). Ian Miller took a shoot and the rebound got away from Kalamazoo goaltender Alex Okicki right to the stick of Moroso on the back door. Rick DeRosa was credited with the second assist.
Port Huron then took advantage of a power play and took a 2-0 lead with an Alex Globke (5th) tip in off of a Brad Lewandowski shot from the point after the face-off win by Nick Valleau.
The period continued the theme of Port Huron scoring early and often. Brett DAndrea (2nd) stuck with a shot from the half boards that found its way past Okicki to extend the lead to 3-0.
Port Huron would take a four-goal lead when Ian Miller scored his seventh of the season with just thirty seconds left in the first.
Kalamazoo changed goalies at the intermission break, bringing in Ken MacLean to replace Okicki after he allowed four goals on 15 shots.
Kalamazoo did the only scoring in the second period as they got a power play tally from Kyle Gattelaro with under three minutes left in the stanza. He was all-alone on top of the crease and jammed home a rebound from a Anythony Appleyard shot. The goal was Gattelaro's seventh of the season.
-MORE- Kalamazoo would bring the game to within two just past the halfway point of the third period. Trailing by three and coming off a scoreless power play, Drew Graves tossed an innocent shot on net that somehow trickled through the legs of Port Huron goalie, Peter Megariotis. The goal was Graves' ninth on the season.
The Fighting Falcons sealed the victory when Nick Sierra added his team leading ninth of the season. The speedy forward got a great feed on the backdoor from the point and slid it past an outstretched MacLean.
In his relief effort, MacLean made 22/23 saves. Megariotis got the victory posting 29 saves on 31 shots faced.
The Jr. K-Wings will return to the Borgess Health Rink at Wings West again on Sunday, November 13th against the Jamestown Ironmen.
