Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings News Release

Kalamazoo, MI- In a low scoring affair between divisional rivals, it would require more than sixty minutes to dub a winner in Kalamazoo on Sunday, as it would be the Johnstown Tomahawks prevailing 2-1 in a ten round shootout over the Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings.

The opening twenty minutes of play from the two rivals was sharp, fast-paced, and physical. Neither team was able to score because it would be the goalies stealing the show. Kalamazoo netminder Alex Okicki made 13 first period stops, including two point blank, goal-saving saves on Jordan Watt. Johnstown started Chris Truehl for the second consecutive day, as he made six stops in his flawless first period.

It took nearly 12 minutes of action in the second frame for Johnstown to break the 0-0 stalemate. After a span of superb, highlight-reel saves by Okicki, a seemingly innocent shot by Zach Wallace somehow found a way to trickle through Okicki's pads and into the goal to give the Tomahawks a 1-0 edge. The lead would hold the remaining eight minutes, as they took their one goal lead into the dressing room after forty minutes.

With Kalamazoo trailing by a goal and time becoming an ally of the Tomahawks, Mike Fazio was able to draw the Jr. K-Wings even at one apiece. Fazio got a feed along the left side and fired a wrister that beat Truehl over the shoulder. His 18th goal of the year came in crunch time with only 2:24 left on the clock. It would lock the game up and send it to overtime.

Overtime wouldn't provide a winner, as each team had a vast amount of scoring chances, primarily Johnstown, who peppered eight shots on goal.

The shootout went to ten rounds, with Jeff Bergh netting the game winner, propelling his team to a 2-1 victory.

The Jr. K-Wings will take the ice again on Friday, March 29th, as they travel to Springfield to close out the regular season with two games against the Jr. Blues. Friday's contest will drop the puck at 7:05 p.m.
