
Kalamazoo, Fort Wayne Open With Wins To Start Round To Of The Playoffs

LAKE ST. LOUIS, MO--- The Kalamazoo Wings and the Fort Wayne Komets both opened with wins to start the second round of the United Hockey League (UHL) Colonial Cup Playoffs on Friday night. The K-Wings needed overtime to pick up a road victory over the Muskegon Fury while the Komets shut out the Rockford IceHogs at home.
Kalamazoo 4 at Muskegon 3 (OT)
For the second time in the 2007 Playoffs, Kalamazoo left wing Nick Bootland scored in overtime to lift the K-Wings to victory. He tallied the game winner just 2:20 into overtime off assists from right wing Tyler Willis and defenseman Nick Toneys. Goaltender Ryan Nie stopped 18 shots to pick up his fifth win of the playoffs.
Center Kory Karlander started the scoring for Kalamazoo at 18:46 in the first period, taking a 1-0 lead. The teams traded five goals in an exciting second period with the score ending in a 3-3 tie after 40 minutes of play. Defensemen Chris McAllister and Adam Elzinga scored for Kalamazoo while left wing Mike Watt tallied two goals for the Fury. A scoreless third period set up Bootland's overtime heroics.
Rockford 0 at Fort Wayne 3
Fort Wayne goaltender Kevin St. Pierre recorded his second shutout of the playoffs by stopping all 31 Rockford shots. Right wing Pascal Morency scored just 55 seconds into the game to lift the Komets to an early 1-0 lead that they would never relinquish. Early in the third period defenseman Mario Larocque tallied a power play goal to take a 2-0 lead with defenseman Guy Dupuis and left wing Daniel Goneau assisting the play. Center J.C. Ruid added an empty net goal at 19:11 of the third period to set the game's final tally.
