Keene Swamp Bats News Release
NORTH ADAMDS - For the third time in the last four games the SwampBats (16-21) allowed their opponent to score double digits as they lost game one of the double-header to the North Adams SteepleCats (20-18) 10-3.
The Keene pitching staff has had its troubles in July and it was no different Sunday afternoon at Joe Wolfe Field.
Ryan Avidano (Georgia) made his eighth start of the season, tied for the league lead, and it did not go well. Avidano pitched a scoreless 1st before the SteepleCats went off in the 2nd inning.
Noah Vaughn (Texas Arlington) led off with a single and came home to score the first run of the game on the RBI single from Kyle Brennan (Buffalo). Nick Riotto (Penn St.) reached on a fielder's choice and Daniel Holst (Southern Missouri St.) advanced to first via a walk. Dustin Shirley stepped to the plate and singled on first pitch he saw to score Riotto and Holst. The hits continued against Avidano when Easton Johnson (Texas Arlington) doubled to score the fifth run of the inning for the SteepleCats.
The scoring for North Adams against Avidano continued in the 4th inning when Dustin Shirley (Dartmouth) singled two bring home two runs.
Avidano's day was done after that. He tossed just 3.1 innings, gave up 7 earned runs on 10 hits, and walked 2 to no strike outs.
Dylan Sbordone (Southern New Hampshire) and Noah Rizio (Keene St.) made relief appearances for the ¬ËBats and combined they pitched 3.2 innings, giving up 3 earned runs on 4 hits, and walked 2 to no strikeouts. The SwampBats pitchers today did not record a strikeout.
Pitching wise, Keene was not on its game and offensively is was not either.
Patrick Sullivan (Georgia) had they best day for Keene at the plate and hit one of his two doubles in the 2nd inning. Sullivan scored the first run of the game for the SwampBats on a Jack Morock (Iowa Western) single.
The other Sullivan double came in the 4th inning and it scored Ryan Costello (Central Connecticut St.). The ¬ËBats tacked on another run in the 4th on a RBI single from Evan McFarland (Lock Haven).
3 runs on 7 hits was the production the Keene was able to get from its offense. Not nearly enough, as North Adams added three more runs of its own in the 5th inning.
Since it was double-header, both games today are only 7 innings.
Keene and North Adams brought no runs across in the 6th and 7th and with the loss Keene drops a game and a half out of the final playoff spot to the Vermont Mountaineers (17-18).
The second game of the double-header will start in approximately 30 minutes.
The game can be heard live on the NECBL Broadcast Network and FM 104.1 and AM 1220 ESPN Keene.
