Jubinville's Hat Trick Helps Wild Sweep Tornado

WENATCHEE, Wash. - Jeff Jubinville (Edmonton, AB) recorded his third hat trick of the season and the Wenatchee Wild swept a 2-game series from the Texas Tornado with a 5-2 win Saturday night at the Town Toyota Center. The win was Wenatchee's third straight, and it was also its fourth win in six games against Texas this season.
Wenatchee dominated early in the first period, capturing a 2-0 lead on goals by Jubinville and Michael Di Puma (Chicago, Ill.). Jubinville's first goal of the game came on the power play a little less than five minutes into the contest when he redirected a shot from the blue line past Texas goaltender Dan Sullivan. Alex McLean (Duluth, Minn.) and Adam McKenzie (Petaluma, Calif.) earned the assists. Di Puma put the Wild up 2-0 with 5:25 remaining in the period on his second short-handed goal of the 2-game series. Di Puma chipped the puck off of the near boards at his team's blue line, and a 2-on-1 developed. As he closed in on goal Di Puma elected to take a wrist shot, which beat Sullivan glove side. Ben Hughes (Jacksonville, Fla.) earned the lone assist on Di Puma's goal. Texas came back late in the first period, managing to tie the contest at 2-2 on an even strength goal by Tyler Mort and a short-handed marker by Jack Prince.
Mitch Torrel (Monticello, Minn.) got the lead back for the Wild early in the second period when he took advantage of a loose puck in the slot and lit the lamp on a hard wrist shot. It was Torrel's 12th goal of the season. Armand Deswardt (Dallas, Texas) and Eric Johnson (Madison, Wis.) were credited with the assists. The score remained 3-2 in favor of the Wild through the rest of the second period.
Jubinville put the game away in the third period on a pair of power play goals. His first goal of the third period, scored at the 3:03 mark, came on a wicked wrist shot from below the near faceoff circle that repositioned the goaltender's Gatorade bottle. Dajon Mingo (Canton, Mich.) assisted. Jubinville's hat trick goal, his 23rd goal of the season, was scored with a little under three minutes left in the contest on a low shot from inside the near faceoff circle. Di Puma and goaltender Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, Minn.) assisted.
Jaeger, a 2-time winner of the Sherbrook Hockey Goaltender of the Month this season, stopped 20 of Texas' 22 shots and increased his record to 16-2-1. Sullivan was peppered with 51 shots, 46 of which he denied. Wenatchee went 3-for-9 on the power play, with all three of its goals being scored by Jubinville. Texas went 0-for-7 on the power play.
Wenatchee will host the Kenai River Brown Bears in a 3-game series next week. The first game of the series will begin at 6:35 p.m. on Thursday. The final two games of the series will begin at 7:05 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
