TRAVERSE CITY - The Janesville Jets converted the rare and difficult three-game road sweep on Sunday at Centre ICE arena, knocking off the Traverse City North Stars by a 2-1 margin to get back in the thick of the NAHL North Division title chase. The Jets bested Marquette by the same 2-1 score on Friday before upending Traverse City 4-3 on Saturday.
The Jets (25-18-3), once seemingly a lock for the third playoff slot in the NAHL North, are now just three points behind first-place Marquette (28-17-0) and Traverse City (26-16-4) with 12 regular season games remaining.
On Sunday afternoon, the teams battled through a scoreless first period before Wes Wauters broke the deadlock 9:24 into the second frame. Jordan Bancroft opened the third with an even-strength marker 5:02 in before Doug Clifford (Woodhaven, MI/Mahoning Valley NAHL) cut the deficit in half just 37 seconds later. Janesville goalkeep Matt Wichorek would not permit further scoring by the hosts, however, sending Traverse City to a fourth straight loss.
Chris Paliafito (Shelbyville, KY/Owatonna NAHL) got the nod for the North Stars, stopping 21 of 23 shots. Nick Shkreli (Romeo, MI/ Mahoning Valley NAHL) and Garrett Thompson (Traverse City, MI/TC North Stars) assisted on Clifford's 19th of the 2009-10 campaign.
The North Stars will try to right the proverbial ship next weekend at home, hosting Motor City in a Friday-Saturday series. Both face-offs are slated for 7 p.m. The following weekend, Traverse City will visit Marquette (Mar. 5-6) for a key two-game showdown with the Rangers. Eight of the Stars' final 12 games are home contests.
