Jr. StreetKings returns for fall season

Mississippi RiverKings News Release

HERNANDO—Many mothers want their children to quit looking at the T.V. and go outside and get some exercise! But playing in the street is out of the question, and such things as unsupervised rollerblading and skateboarding in school parking lots is far less than ideal.

The Jr. StreetKings youth in-line hockey league offers a solution: organized skating at the Jr. StreetKings arena at the Hernando Civic Center. Open registration begins August 7 for their fall league, which begins the following week.

"We really feel like youth hockey offers families a good alternative," said Memphis RiverKings team captain Don Parsons, who heads up the league. "We have a lot of parents who are involved with our teams, and it keeps kids busy after school. It offers the opportunity for parents and kids to spend time together and cuts down on juvenile delinquency by keeping kids occupied in positive activities."

Additionally, Parsons said the Jr. StreetKings offers the advantage of training by professionals. Many of the RiverKings team members help out by coaching and refereeing games.

"This also allows kids to have positive role models," Parsons said. "Having a mentor or somebody to look up to can make all the difference in a child's life."

There will be an open skate for $5 per child during registration on August 7. Beginner-level skaters and ages 10 and under may register from 2-3 p.m. Ages 11 and over may register from 3-4 p.m.

Registration forms and waivers may be downloaded by going to the Internet at www.riverkings.com and clicking on the third link on the left hand side of the page. Forms will also be available at the arena. League registration is $150. To register now or for information on sponsoring a team, call Judy Dunlop at 662-470-2160 or call Parsons, 901-870-PUCK.
