Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings News Release

Game Recap- Friday, April 13th @ Traverse City North Stars. 6-2 Loss.

Traverse City, MI- Sean Murphy netted a hat trick, and led the Traverse City North Stars to a 6-2 victory over the Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings on Friday night in Traverse City. The win for the North Stars makes the series 2-1, still in favor of Kalamazoo.

A slow start for Kalamazoo gave the North Stars of Traverse City a great opportunity to strike first. They didn't pass up the chance, as they found the back of the net on a four-minute power play late in the period. A centering feed from Will Badner found the stick of Sean Murphy, who put home is second of the post-season.

The second was full of scoring for both teams, starting with the second of the night from Murphy. His team leading third tally of the playoffs gave his team a 2-0 lead.

Three minutes and twenty-one seconds later, Jared Von Wormer lit the lamp for his first of the playoffs, while giving his team a three-goal lead.

Kalamazoo couldn't be silenced forever, though, as they clawed their way back during an extended 5-on-3 power play. Robbie Payne (3rd) scored on a rebound from the right-wing side off a shot from Chris Leone.

Twenty seconds later, and still on the man-advantage, Brandon Flood tallied his second of the playoffs to bring Kalamazoo to within a goal heading into the third period. Again getting the primary assist on the tally was Leone.

Under two minutes into the third, Murphy capped off the hat trick with his fourth of the playoffs to give his team a 4-2 lead.

Under three minutes later, Traverse City padded their lead to three with the first of the playoffs from Will Badner.

To make their win decisive, Chris Leibenger made it 6-2 with his sharp angle tally, 5:07 into the third period. There would be no more scoring, and Traverse City would walk away with a 6-2 lead.

Saturday, April 14st @ Traverse City North Stars. 3-2 OT/Win.

Traverse City, MI- Alex Okicki stopped 37 shots, as he lead the Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings to a 3-2 overtime victory and a 3-1 series victory over the Traverse City North Stars in the North Divisional Semifinals on Saturday at Centre Ice Arena in Traverse City

The first period contained back and forth action the entire frame, however neither team was able to find the back of the net. Traverse City outshot Kalamazoo 11-10 during the opening period, while Kalamazoo killed off three power play attempts in the first. Those kills were highlighted by 1:44 of five-on-three time in which the Jr. K-Wings denied the North Stars any real scoring opportunity.

Scoring ran wild in the second, as the two teams combined for four goals in the middle frame. Starting the scoring for Traverse City, and giving them a 1-0 lead was Will Badner, who scored his second of the playoffs on a loose puck rebound in front of the goal.

Four minutes and fourteen seconds later, Kalamazoo's Brett Beauvais scored his first of the playoffs with a left-side wrister from the point, which locked the game up at one goal apiece.

Midway through the second, with the game tied at one apiece, Traverse City took their second lead of the game with the first of the playoffs by Seth Adams.

With less than three minutes to go in the second, and down a goal, the Jr. K-Wings' Danny Hamburg drew his team even with his low-slot goal. The goal for Hamburg, the first of his playoff career, came at the 17:10 mark of the middle frame.

No scoring in the third lead to overtime, the first of the post-season for either team.

8:13 into overtime, Drew Graves broke the tie and gave Kalamazoo a 3-2 victory with his breakaway tally. The goal for Graves was his third of the playoffs.
