Game Rewind

Friday, November 4th @ Port Huron Fighting Falcons. 5-3 Loss.

Port Huron, MI- Despite the Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings best effort, they were unable to complete the comeback against Port Huron losing 5-3. Robbie Payne continued his hot streak scoring two goals and Andrew Graves added two assists in the losing effort.

The first period got underway way with an early strike by the Fighting Falcons. Ian Miller scored the first goal of the game on the first shot for Port Huron with assists from Mike Moroso and Alex Archibald. Kalamazoo goaltender Kenneth MacLean settled down stopping the next six shots.

Port Huron was not done in the first as they struck again six minutes later with a goal from Mike Moroso. Moroso's second point of the game extended the Falcon's lead to 2-0 halfway through the period. Rick Derosa and Logan Lemirande were credited with the assists.

The second period yielded no goals as both goaltenders made the necessary saves for their teams. MacLean finished the period with 20 saves on 22 shots and Port Huron's Perter Megariotis was perfect with 25 saves through two.

In the third period the Jr. K-Wings got on the board with a goal from their hottest goal scorer, Robbie Payne. Taking a pass from Andrew Graves, Payne netted Kalamazoo's first of the game and his 14th of the year to cut the lead to 2-1.

Quickly rebounding, Port Huron regained their two-goal lead with a strike from Ryan Nick. The Nick score at 9:58 into the third drew assists from Alex Globke and Maxwell Reavis.

The Jr. K-Wings would not go away easy. Payne netted his second of the game and 15th on the year to once again cut the lead to one goal at 3-2. Chris Leone was credited with the primary assist and Graves notched his second point of the game with another assist.

With one minute remaining, Port Huron once again took back their two-goal lead with a late tally by Nicholas Sierra. Logan Lemirande added his second assist of the night as well as Bret Lewandowski to make it 4-2.

The Jr. K-Wings did not quit, however, Christian George gave Kalamazoo a fighting chance when he netted the K-Wings 3rd goal of the game with 27 seconds remaining. Nick Kovalchik and Chris Hughes powered the goal with quick passes that cut the lead back down to one.

Port Huron's lead proved to be too much to handle when Ian Miller added another goal on the desperate Jr. K-Wings team who were forced to pull their net-minder. Derosa had notched second assist on the night to salt away the victory.

Time expired the Fighting Falcons held off the 3rd period comeback attempt by the Jr. K-Wings and skated to a 5-3 victory.

Saturday, November 5th Vs. Port Huron Fighting Falcons. 5-2 Loss.

Kalamazoo, MI- Even without their leading scorer, the Port Huron Fighting Falcons scored five times en route to their 5-2 victory over the Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings on Saturday at the Borgess Health Rink at Wings West. The victory handed them sole possession of first place in the North Division.

The first period of play opened with the Fighting Falcons getting on the board first courtesy of Mike Moroso (7th). Ian Miller took a shoot and the rebound got away from Kalamazoo goaltender Alex Okicki right to the stick of Moroso on the back door. Rick DeRosa was credited with the second assist.

Port Huron then took advantage of a power play and took a 2-0 lead with an Alex Globke (5th) tip in off of a Brad Lewandowski shot from the point after the face-off win by Nick Valleau.

The period continued the theme of Port Huron scoring early and often. Brett DAndrea (2nd) stuck with a shot from the half boards that found its way past Okicki to extend the lead to 3-0.

Port Huron would take a four-goal lead when Ian Miller scored his seventh of the season with just thirty seconds left in the first.

Kalamazoo changed goalies at the intermission break, bringing in Ken MacLean to replace Okicki after he allowed four goals on 15 shots.

Kalamazoo did the only scoring in the second period as they got a power play tally from Kyle Gattelaro with under three minutes left in the stanza. He was all-alone on top of the crease and jammed home a rebound from a Anythony Appleyard shot. The goal was Gattelaro's seventh of the season.

Kalamazoo would bring the game to within two just past the halfway point of the third period. Trailing by three and coming off a scoreless power play, Drew Graves tossed an innocent shot on net that somehow trickled through the legs of Port Huron goalie, Peter Megariotis. The goal was Graves' ninth on the season.

The Fighting Falcons sealed the victory when Nick Sierra added his team leading ninth of the season. The speedy forward got a great feed on the backdoor from the point and slid it past an outstretched MacLean.

In his relief effort, MacLean made 22/23 saves. Megariotis got the victory posting 29 saves on 31 shots faced.

Looking Ahead

The Jr. K-Wings will hit the ice three times over the course of the next week. They start with a game Wednesday night in Flint against the Michigan Warriors, and two games over the weekend. Michigan, once atop the North Division, surrendered their lead to Kalamazoo and later Port Huron during their active seven game losing streak. The Warriors are looking to gain their first victory since beating the Fighting Falcons on October 13th. It is the first weekday game for the Jr. K-Wings on the season as the puck is set to drop from the Perani's Rink in Flint at 7:30.

Saturday night sees the Jr. K-Wings off to Port Huron yet again for another tussle against the Fighting Falcons. Since heading to Port Huron last week with sole possession of the North Division lead, Kalamazoo dropped two straight to Port Huron, including their first loss of the season at the Borgess Health Rink at Wings West. Goalie Peter Megariotis played in both games versus Kalamazoo, gaining two victories on his way to being named the third star of the week by the NAHL.

Sunday afternoon brings another home game to Kalamazoo. The Jamestown Ironmen come into the Borgess Health Rink at Wings West for an afternoon showdown. Jamestown has leap-frogged Traverse City for fourth place in the division, but the Ironmen have played nine more games than the North Stars. The last time these teams met, Kalamazoo took two of three in a weekend series in Jamestown, NY.
