Jon Prosinski named 2013 BIG EAST Pre-Season Pitcher of the Year

NEWPORT, R.I. - Seton Hall senior Jon Prosinski, a two-time Newport Gull (2011 and 2012), has been named the 2013 Pre-Season BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year.
A First Team All-BIG EAST selection last spring, Prosinski went 9-3 with a 3.52 ERA and did not allow a home run in 94.2 innings of work.ÃÂ An All-NJCBA pick, he was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll four times and earned NJCBA Pitcher of the Week honors on April 16.
The right-hander pitched back-to-back complete-game shutouts against Fordham and Rutgers respectively. Prosinski led the conference with a 1.91 ERA in 2011, while helping lead the Pirates to the BIG EAST Championship. The Skillman, New Jersey native was one of only two unanimous selections to the 2013 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.ÃÂ
In 2012, Prosinski returned for his second stint with the Gulls but was limited to just five appearances (four starts) due to injury, posting a 1-1 record during the regular season. Prosinski provided outstanding relief when it mattered most, in the NECBL playoffs. Despite ultimately taking the loss, he tossed 4.2 innings of two-hit ball with six strikeouts in extra-innings on the road against the Sanford Mainers on Aug. 4. His solid relief effort allowed the Gulls to save their bullpen for the remainder of the playoffs and helped propel them to their fifth New England Collegiate Baseball League championship.
In 2011, Prosinski, an NECBL All-Star, was outstanding in seven appearances (five starts), in which he posted a 4-0 record and 2.16 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 33.1 innings of work, before being shut down midway through the season with an injury.
The Gulls, who moved to Newport's historic Cardines Field in 2001 after two seasons as the Rhode Island Gulls in Cranston, have since become the NECBL's most successful franchise, winning five championships in New England Collegiate Baseball League play ('01, '02, '05, '09 and '12). In addition to their accomplishments on the field, the Newport Gulls led the NECBL in attendance by a wide margin in 2012, averaging 2,126 fans per game.
Following the 2012 season, the Newport Gulls were ranked No. 1 nationally by Perfect Game USA in its final rankings of summer collegiate baseball teams.
