NEWPORT, R.I. - Former Newport Gull and Wheaton senior right-handed pitcher Frank Holbrook was named to the D3baseball.com Division III Preseason All-America second team on Feb. 16.

Holbrook, the Gulls Opening Day starter in 2012, and a local product that resides in nearby Middletown, will be back with the Newport Gulls as an assistant coach for the 2013 season. The Aquidneck Island native is a former Newport Gulls batboy and his family has also been a host family for Gulls players in the past.

In 2012, Holbrook made 10 appearances (one start) for the Gulls, going 3-0 with a 5.81 ERA with 23 strikeouts and just three walks in 21.2 innings of work during the regular season. Holbrook did not make an appearance in the postseason as the Gulls won their fifth New England Collegiate Baseball League Championship.

In 2013, Holbrook returns for his senior season as the ace of the Wheaton pitching staff which ranked tenth overall among all NCAA Division III programs in earned run average last spring (2.80).

As a junior, Holbrook led the staff with a 10-0 record overall, winning 10 of his 12 starts, striking out 52 batters over 84.2 innings pitched while holding opponents to a .229 batting average. His 1.38 ERA ranked ninth overall in the country as Wheaton finished the 2012 season with a 41-11 record, the second most wins in program history.

The Gulls, who moved to Newport's historic Cardines Field in 2001 after two seasons as the Rhode Island Gulls in Cranston, have since become the NECBL's most successful franchise, winning five championships in New England Collegiate Baseball League play ('01, '02, '05, '09 and '12). In addition to their accomplishments on the field, the Newport Gulls led the NECBL in attendance by a wide margin in 2012, averaging 2,126 fans per game.

Following the 2012 season, the Newport Gulls were ranked No. 1 nationally by Perfect Game USA in its final rankings of summer collegiate baseball teams.
