Joly Plays Hero as Colorado Wins Second Straight in OT
WEST VALLEY CITY, UT. - Eagles forward Michael Joly scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner in overtime, while fellow forward J.C. Beaudin posted two goals and an assist as Colorado topped Utah 4-3 on Saturday. The victory now gives Colorado points in four straight games and also allowed the Eagles to collect five of a possible six points on their three-game road trip.
Colorado would be the first team to find the back of the net, as forward Julien Nantel would lead a 2-on-1 rush down the ice, sending a cross-slot pass onto the tape of Beaudin who would tip the puck past Utah goalie Kevin Carr to give the Eagles a 1-0 edge at the 10:01 mark of the first period.
Just 1:43 later Colorado would take advantage of its first power play of the evening, as Beaudin would skate the puck from the left wing boards through the left circle before snapping a shot into the back of the net to stretch the Eagles lead to 2-0.
Holding a two-goal advantage after the opening 20 minutes, Colorado would again connect on the power play when forward Michael Joly deflected a shot from the blue line past Carr to grow the Eagles advantage to 3-0 at the 9:44 mark of the second period.
Utah would quickly respond, as just 41 seconds after Joly's goal, Grizzlies defenseman Taylor Richart buried a one-timer from the right circle to trim the Colorado lead to 3-1. A turnover by the Eagles in the Utah zone just seconds later would then spring forward Zach Saar on a rush down the left wing, culminating with a wrist shot that would beat Eagles goalie Joe Cannata and slice the Colorado advantage to 3-2 with 6:54 to play in the middle frame.
The Grizzlies would generate the equalizer early in the third period when defenseman Mitch Jones tipped a pass in the low slot past Cannata to tie the game 3-3 at the 1:25 mark of the final frame of regulation.
With 60 minutes unable to determine a winner, Colorado headed to overtime for a fourth consecutive game. After Cannata made two highlight-reel saves against Utah breakaways, Joly would take the puck and split a pair of Grizzlies at the blue line, before feeding the puck into the back of the net to give Colorado the 4-3 win at the 2:36 mark of OT.
The Eagles finished the night going 2-3 on the power play, while the Grizzlies were denied on all three of their chances on the man-advantage. Cannata improved to 5-0-0-0 on the year, stopping 36 of Utah's 39 shots in the contest.
