Portland Pirates News Release
Alex Bolduc scored twice for the Pirates and Chad Johnson rebounded from giving up 8 goals the night before as the Portland Pirates shut out the St. John's IceCaps Wednesday night by a score of 4-0.
Wednesday night's contest got off to a slower start than the previous nights', but the Pirates again struck first, and again, it was a goal from the captain. With 7:44 left the first, Alexandre Bolduc scored in his 4th straight game for Portland, to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.
In the second, the Pirates kept up the pressure, with Brett Hextall providing the offense for Portland. Hextall took a Phil Lane pass and finished it with style, roofing it over Pasquale 8:09 into the second to extend the Pirate's lead to two.
Penalties became an issue for Portland in the second, with Maxim Goncharov racking up fourteen minutes of penalty time in the period. Goncharov, who committed an interference violation in the first, accounted for all three penalties in the second, including a ten minute misconduct penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct after he slammed his stick on the ice in protest of being whistled for interference. Ethan Werek would serve the interference minor that extended into the third period.
In the third, the Pirates would add two more goals, both on special teams. Bolduc got the first goal of the period, taking the feed from Oliver Ekman-Larsson and putting it past Pasquale just 24 seconds into the period. The shorthanded goal was Bolduc's 2nd of the game and 5th of the season. The next Pirates goal came on the other end of special teams, as Chris Conner handled a pass from Evan Brophey and slapped it past Pasquale on the power play. Conner's goal at 7:45 into the third was his 5th of the season.
Johnson recovered from his rough night before with 27 saves for his 7th career AHL shutout and first with the Pirates - the first Pirates shutout since David Leggio on March 29, 2011. His record improves to 1-2-1-0 on the season. Eddie Pasquale took the loss for the IceCaps, falling to 2-3-0-0 after stopping 15 of 19 Pirates shots.
The Pirates improve to 2-2-1-0 on the season, while the IceCaps fall to 3-3-0-0. Portland earned 3 of 4 possible points on their two game Canadian road trip.
The Pirates get back to home action on Saturday, October 27th when they take on the Binghamton Senators at the Androscoggin Bank Colisée in the 6th annual Pink in the Rink Game, presented by Maine Medical Center Cancer Institute. The Pirates will be wearing special pink jerseys to help raise money for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. The game can be heard on 95.5 and 95.9 WPEI in the Portland area, 92.7FM and 100.7 FM WOXO FM in the Lewiston/Auburn area, and online on the WLOB radio player and AHL Live.
