April 3, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-The Dayton Dragons today announced the final name on their list of "20 Greatest Dragons." The player recognition is part of the organization's 20th Season Celebration. Players selected on the list of 20 have been announced in random order leading up to the Dragons 20th Opening Night game on Thursday, April 4 against the Bowling Green Hot Rods.
Next on the list of the 20 Greatest Dragons is:
Joey Votto
Votto played in 171 games over the 2003 and '04 seasons with the Dragons. In 2004, he batted .302 with 14 home runs in 111 games.
Votto made his MLB debut with the Reds in 2007 and has put together one of the greatest careers in franchise history. He won the National League Most Valuable Player award in 2010 and made his first of six appearances (so far) in the MLB All-Star Game that same year. Entering the 2019 season, Votto's .427 career on-base percentage ranked 10th in Major League history, and eight of the nine players ahead of him are in the hall-of-fame.
Votto is fifth in Reds history in career home runs, fifth in doubles, ninth in hits, and seventh in games played. He is one of only three players in Reds history to produce a career batting average with Cincinnati of at least .300 with at least 250 home runs.
Votto joins the following players who have been previously announced as the 20 Greatest Dragons: Austin Kearns, Zack Cozart, Justin Turner, Homer Bailey, Samone Peters, Devin Mesoraco, Didi Gregorius, Tucker Barnhart, Todd Frazier, Wily Mo Peña, Jesse Winker, Edwin Encarnacion, Johnny Cueto, Luis Bolivar, Jose Siri, Jay Bruce, Donald Lutz, Adam Dunn, and Billy Hamilton.
The 20 Greatest Dragons were selected based on a media vote of Dragons television, newspaper, radio, and internet reporters. Additionally, during the 2019 season, the Dragons will be conducting a fan vote featuring one player per position to announce their all-time greatest lineup.
