Joes Lose Longest Game In SCL History, 4-2
July 30, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
Anderson Joes News Release
The Joes played the longest game in South Coast League history Monday, a 16-inning, 5-and-a-half-hour contest that saw Anderson eventually lose to South Georgia, 4-2, in front of 714 at Anderson Memorial Stadium.
The Joes left 10 of their 15 stranded runners on base in the ninth inning and beyond, squandering numerous opportunities in the historic loss to the Peanuts.
Beginning at 11:05 a.m., the game saw Anderson starter Ronald Ball duel South Georgia hurler Dumas Garcia to a 2-1 game after seven innings.
The Peanuts took the early 1-0 lead in the second inning before the Joes scored Hector Borg and Desi Wilson in the third and sixth innings, respectively, on a throwing error and Kevin Noles RBI single.
But with Ball out of the game, South Georgia (13-4, 46-15 overall) tied the contest with a Curtis Goodwin single that drove in Brandon Woolard. From that point, the teams went scoreless for 7-and-a-half innings until Johnny Washington delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded in the top of the 16th off Chase Leatherwood -- who had already thrown three scoreless innings in relief.
Anderson (7-11, 20-43) used six pitchers and all its position players in the loss. South Georgia used six pitchers and also exhausted its supply of position players, using two pitchers to play left field from the 10th inning on.
The Joes managed 11 hits, highlighted by Borg's 3-for-7 performance. Wilson was the only other Joe with multiple hits, going 2-for-6 with a run scored. In the start, Ball lasted seven innings, striking out five and allowing just one run on six walks and five hits. The Peanuts stranded 21 runners, a testament to how often Anderson's pitchers worked into and out of trouble.
The game eclipses the 14-inning contest played between Bradenton and Aiken on June 9 and the 5:33 game time is the longest in the league this season.
In their last two games, the Joes have now played a combined 8 hours, 59 minutes of baseball.
Peanuts closer Drew Shetrone not only scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 16th, but earned the win for South Georgia, improving to 4-3 on the year. Leatherwood took the loss, dropping to 1-2.
The teams play game two Tuesday night at 7:05. Anderson's Jan Granado (5-3) and South Georgia's Jerome Gamble (2-0) are the probable starting pitchers.
