Peanuts Win Longest Game In SCL History

July 30, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
South Georgia Peanuts News Release

The South Georgia Peanuts, presented by Security Bank, played the longest game in South Coast League history on Monday. In 16 innings, the Peanuts were victorious over Anderson 4-2.

The Peanuts took an early lead in the second inning. With one out, Brandon Woolard doubled and then came around to score a batter later when Steve Butler doubled him home. Anderson answered back in the third when Hector Borg scored on a Peanut error. Anderson then took a lead in the sixth when Desi Wilson scored from second on a Kevin Noles single. That would be all the scoring on the day for the Joes.

South Georgia was able to tie the game up in the eighth inning. Woolard struck again as he led the inning off with a double. After advancing to third, Woolard came home on a Curtis Goodwin Sr. single. Neither team would score after that for another seven innings.

In the top of the 16th, Drew Shetrone beat out a ground ball for a hit with one out. Woolard and Butler both walked to load the bases. With the infield playing in on the grass, Johnny Washington singled up the middle to score Shetrone and Woolard. Anderson went down in order in the bottom of the 16th.

Pitching was the story for the Peanuts. Dumas Garcia got the start and allowed two unearned runs in six innings of work. Derek Duclos, Chris Webb, Shannon Wirth, Jake Upwood and Drew Shetrone combined to pitch nine innings of scoreless ball. Shetrone picked up his first win with the Peanuts pitching three innings and allowing just three hits.

Late in the game, the Peanuts ran out of position players and were forced to use pitchers Upwood and Wirth in left field. Both played well and each made a difficult catch in extra innings. Goodwin and Woolard each had three hits while Washington had two. Woolard also scored three runs in the contest.

The Peanuts will be looking for the series win on Tuesday against Anderson. First pitch is set for 7:05. Jerome Gamble is expected to get the start for the Peanuts. The game can be heard in South Georgia on "1450 The Fan" and online at southgeorgiapeanuts.com.
