Joes Lose Game One For the Third Straight Time in Charlotte County
August 16, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
Anderson Joes News Release
For the third time in three trips to Charlotte County this year, Anderson lost game one of the series, this time dropping a 3-1 contest to the Redfish at Charlotte County Sports Park on Thursday night.
The game was marred by a 1-hour, 10-minute rain delay in the bottom of the fifth inning of a 0-0 game before the teams scored all the runs thereafter.
Charlotte County (8-24, 20-57) placed Jason Hurst on-base with a single before the rains fell, and he scored on an RBI single from Aaron Simmons after the delay.
Anderson (17-17, 30-49) tied the game in its next trip to the plate, scoring Brandon Carter from second on a Redfish throwing error that also allowed Rafael Alvarez to reach base.
The teams went scoreless until the bottom of the eighth, when the Redfish scored two runs on back-to-back singles by P.J. Lehmann and former Joes outfielder Billy Hogan.
Anderson threatened with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the ninth, but Rafael Diaz popped out to first to end the game.
The mammoth rain delay interrupted a sparkling pitchers' duel between Anderson's Chase Leatherwood and Charlotte County's Celson Polanco.
Leatherwood, making his first start of the year after 15 relief appearances, allowed just one hit in four innings, walking none while striking out six and giving up one run.
Polanco lasted five shutout innings, allowing two hits and no walks while striking out a pair of Joes.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for Anderson, while the victory took Charlotte County out of a six-game losing skid and dropped the Joes to 7-6 against the Redfish this year.
If history repeats itself, Anderson could look forward to the rest of the series. In their first two trips to Charlotte County this season, the Joes lost the first game of both series, each played the night of Anderson's arrival in town after an overnight, 10+ hour drive.
In those series, though, the Joes won the final two games both times and look to continued the trend with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch Friday.
Staff ace Jan Granado is scheduled to pitch for the Anderson against an as-yet-undetermined starter for Charlotte County.
