Joe Corona Named to USL Championship Team of the Week
April 25, 2023 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
San Diego Loyal News Release
SAN DIEGO - San Diego Loyal SC midfielder Joe Corona was named to The USL Championship Team of the Week for his performance in the club's 1-0 win against Tampa Bay Rowdies Sunday at Torero Stadium. The National City native earned the honors after playing the full match while helping his team control the midfield. It's been a fast start for Corona in his first USL Championship season, helping Head Coach Nate Miller's team to a fourth-straight win at home where the club remains undefeated.
Corona completed 50 of 55 passes while creating two big chances and won 10 of 12 duels and four of six tackles against Tampa Bay. Signing with SD Loyal this offseason from Swedish side GIF Sundsvall, Corona was brought in to help with his vast experience and leadership skills as a midfielder who can defend but also generate an attack. Quickly earning his spot as a starter, the former U.S. Men's National Team player has played in all seven USL Championship matches this season, logging 459 minutes.
Corona is the third SD Loyal player to be named to The USL Championship's Team of the Week in 2023. Koke Vegas and Jackson Simba were each named to the team in March. Vegas earned Week 2 honors for his shutout outing against Phoenix Rising FC while Simba attained Week 1 honors after scoring the game-winner against Detroit City FC in SD Loyal's season opening 1-0 win. Current SD Loyal players named to the Team of the Week in 2022 include Tumi Moshobane, Charlie Adams, Alejandro Guido, Grant Stoneman, Collin Martin and Vegas.
SD Loyal now heads into its next match, a Third Round affair in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup against Major League Soccer side Seattle Sounders FC Wednesday night (7 p.m.). The club will then return for its next home match on Saturday, April 29 against El Paso Locomotive FC (7 p.m.). Tickets start at just $15 and are available now at sdloyal.com/tickets.
