Potomac Nationals News Release
WOODBRIDGE, Va.- The Potomac Nationals announced today that left-handed reliever Joe Beimel will join the P-Nats in Woodbridge in time for their series opener with the Frederick Keys Friday night at Pfitzner Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 ET.
Beimel signed with the Nationals during Spring Training after spending the last three seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Originally selected in the 18th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1998 First-Year Player draft, Beimel's career path has led from Pittsburgh to Minnesota to Tampa Bay to Los Angeles and now to Washington as he has posted spectacular numbers as a reliever throughout his time in the big leagues.
Beimel compiled a 0-1 record with a 1.23 ERA in eight games for the Nationals this season before injuring his hip flexor in a game on April 20. It is rumored that Beimel will likely be named the Nationals' closer once he returns to Washington, as he has been the most effective arm in the Nats' bullpen this season.
The Duquesne product enjoyed his most successful year in 2008 with the Dodgers, going 5-1 with a 2.02 ERA. Beimel was equally effective against both righties and lefties and did not allow a home run in 71 appearances on the season.
The southpaw will return to Washington as soon as he is eligible to be activated off the disabled list on May 6.
This is the first Major Leaguer to make a rehab assignment in Potomac in 2009. In 2008, P-Nats fans were able to watch many Major Leaguers don P-Nats uniforms. Ryan Zimmerman, Elijah Dukes, Chad Cordero, Ronnie Belliard, and Paul Lo Duca were just some of the big names that made appearances with Potomac a season ago.
In addition, the team has announced that outfielder Aaron Seuss has been re-assigned to the Low-A Hagerstown Suns. In nine games for the P-Nats in 2009, Seuss hit .241 with four doubles.
Come on out to the ballpark Friday night for Freebie Friday at Pfitzner Stadium! The team will be giving away team wall calendars to the first 1,000 fans through the gates. Gates open at 6:00 ET.
