Lancaster JetHawks News Release
(LANCASTER, CA) - Timely hitting and an outstanding effort from the bullpen propelled the JetHawks to a 4-3 comeback victory over Inland Empire at Clear Channel Stadium Monday. Barry Butera's walk-off RBI single enabled Lancaster to complete its first series sweep of the season. The JetHawks are now in the midst of a five-game win streak and have won six of their last seven ballgames.
After the two teams traded runs in the second inning, Inland Empire mounted a two-out rally against JetHawks starter Leandro Cespedes in the top of the third. Cespedes allowed two singles and a walk to load the bases. Chris Gutierrez laced a two-run double into right-center field, which gave the 66ers a 3-1 advantage.
The JetHawks turned to the bullpen to prevent the 66ers from increasing their lead and a trio of Lancaster relievers rose to the occasion. Michael Schurz rebounded from a rough debut with the JetHawks, in which he allowed two hits and an earned run in 1/3 of an inning on Saturday night. Schurz worked three scoreless innings against the 66ers Monday, allowing no hits and recording two strikeouts.
Ashton Mowdy and Kyle Godfrey combine to limit Inland Empire to one hit and no runs over the final three innings. Collectively, the JetHawks relievers allowed one hit and no runs in six innings of work.
As a result, the JetHawks offense was able to chip away at the Inland Empire lead. Lancaster received an RBI single from Brandon Barnes in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 3-2 contest.
Two innings later, David Flores smacked a solo home run off the foul pole in left field to even the score at 3-3.
After Godfrey tossed a scoreless inning in the top of the ninth, the JetHawks seized an opportunity to win the game in walk-off fashion. Jordan Comadena drew a leadoff walk from 66ers reliever Kenley Jansen. Comadena advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Brandon Wikoff and took third when Jay Austin grounded out to Gutierrez at short. Butera served a single into center field and Comadena trotted home with the winning run.
Godfrey (2-1) earned the win for Lancaster. Jansen (1-1) took the loss for Inland Empire. With the win, the JetHawks improved to 13-17 while the loss dropped the 66ers to 10-22.
The JetHawks will take on Rancho Cucamonga at the Epicenter in the opener of a seven-game road trip on Tuesday. Right-hander Ross Seaton (1-2, 4.50 ERA) gets the start for Lancaster. The Quakes are expected to counter with right-hander Ryan Chaffee (1-1, 16.20 ERA). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. Tune in for all the live action beginning with the JetHawks Pre-Game Show at 6:50 p.m. on www.jethawks.com/csn and News Talk 1380-AM KOSS.
