Lancaster JetHawks News Release
MODESTO, Calif. - The JetHawks scored first, but the Modesto Nuts scored often to take the series-opener, 13-1, on Friday night at John Thurman Field.
The loss was the ninth for the JetHawks in their last 13 games and dropped them to .500 on the season (27-27, 61-61) for the first time since they were 34-34 at the All-Star break.
Taylor Snyder stroked a RBI-single in the first inning to put the JetHawks ahead, 1-0, but they were unable to take advantage of a number of opportunities to add their total against Nuts starter Ian McKinney (12-5).
Lancaster had runners at first and third with nobody out in the second but didn't score. They had the bases loaded in the fourth inning with one out and again failed to cross the plate.
Meanwhile, Modesto (26-28, 56-68) tied the game in the first inning against starter Garrett Schilling (8-7) before taking the lead on a David Sheaffer home run in the second.
The Nuts, up 4-1 entering the sixth inning, chased Schilling from the game and broke it open with four runs.
Schilling allowed eight runs (six earned) on a season-high 11 hits over five-plus innings. He struck out two, walked two and hit two batters.
Modesto added four more runs in the seventh on a Julio Rodriguez grand slam. The 18-year-old outfielder, the youngest player to play in the Cal League this season, finished 4-for-5 in his High-A debut.
The series continues on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Lefty Lucas Gilbreath will take the ball for Lancaster against right-hander Clay Chandler.
