Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla. (June 29, 2014) - The Fort Myers Miracle fell 5-2 to the Palm Beach Cardinals on Sunday afternoon at Hammond Stadium in the second of a three-game series.
Cardinals starter Tyrell Jenkins stifled the Miracle offense for six shutout innings. Jenkins (2-1) maneuvered through four walks and three hits to strand seven Miracle base runners while striking out just one.
Palm Beach got on the board in the first inning off Miracle starter Jose Berrios. On a 1-1 pitch, Bruce Caldwell lifted a deep fly ball over the fence in right field for his first of two home runs on the afternoon. The solo blast from Caldwell gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth, Nick Martini added a RBI hit. Luke Voit led off with a single through the left side. Alex Mejia laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Voit to second. Martini then laced a first pitch fastball into right field to bring in Voit and extend the Palm Beach lead to 2-0.
Berrios (8-3) took the loss despite delivering the Miracle a quality start. Over seven innings, Berrios allowed two runs on five hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. The loss was Berrios' first since May 1. Berrios' second inning strikeout of Jimmy Bosco was his 100th of the season.
Brian Gilbert replaced Berrios in the eighth inning. After retiring the first hitter, Gilbert surrendered a solo homer to Charlie Tilson. Then, Ildemar Vargas singled into right and Caldwell launched his second home run of the game, a two-run shot to deep right, 5-0.
The Miracle picked up a run in each of the eighth and ninth innings. In the eighth, Travis Harrison drove in Dalton Hicks with a single into center. In the ninth, Lance Ray knocked in Niko Goodrum with a base hit through the right side.
Tyler Jones pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Miracle.
