Portland Lumberjax News Release
PORTLAND, Jan. 8, 2007 - After a successful overtime win at home against the Eastern Division Champion Buffalo Bandits, the Portland LumberJax (1-0) are prepared for their road trip to take on the Philadelphia Wings (0-1) on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2006 at 4:30 p.m. (PST) and will look to extend their regular season winning streak to eight games. Last season the Jax defeated the Wings, 15-12, at the Wachovia Center on Feb. 18, 2006.
"This is a tough game for us, because Philadelphia is a very good team," said Head Coach and General Manger Derek Keenan. "With three top draft picks from the 2006 Entry Draft, they may have improved more than any other team in the NLL [National Lacrosse League]. Offensively, they have a lot of options making them very difficult to defend, and defensively they are big and tough with solid goaltending."
This also marks the second season that goalie Dallas Eliuk will travel to Philadelphia to take on his former team in the Wachovia Center. Eliuk requested to be traded to the LumberJax early last season after playing with the Wings for 15 years. Before relocating to Portland, Eliuk was Philadelphia's longest-tenured athlete in any professional sport. In his first return to the Wachovia Center with the LumberJax last February, he recorded 34 saves and allowed 12 goals against on the night.
The Jax are looking to repeat their 15-12 win from last season, where they controlled possession-time and the score for most of the game. Eight Portland players scored during the contest with Ryan Sharp, Mike Hominuck and Ted Dowling [retired] each contributing hat tricks. Wings' forward Jake Bergey was Philadelphia's high scorer with four goals and Jeff Ratcliffe netted three goals and assisted on one other. Both of the Wings' forwards are back this year for Saturday's match up in Philadelphia.
The Wings opened their 2007 campaign on the road in Edmonton on Saturday, Jan. 6 with a 13-12 loss to the Rush. Philadelphia controlled most of the game, until the Rush netted seven points in the final quarter, including Randy Daly's game-winning goal with two-seconds remaining to clinch the win. The Edmonton Rush (1-0) secured their first-ever home win after finishing last season at the bottom of the NLL with a 1-15 record.
