Ottawa Renegades News Release

OTTAWA – Jason Armstead, one of the most electrifying players in the CFL during the 2004 season, has re-signed a long-term contract with the Ottawa Renegades football club that will ensure the receiver staying in the nation’s capital for at least the next two seasons.

The 25-year-old Armstead, who gained national attention after being the East division nominee for the CFLÂ’s special teams player-of-the-year honour as a rookie last fall, inked a two-year contract (plus an option) to come back to Ottawa after a solid rookie season in the professional ranks.

“I’m happy to be back in Ottawa. I’m ready to spend my summer there and hope to turn things around as a team,” said Armstead, a native of Moss Point, Mississippi. “I’m looking forward to getting back into football and turning things around with the quality players we have. The fact Coach Paopao is back is one of the main reasons I’m back. Now, I'm just excited to get out there and do more good things.”

Armstead, who spurned NFL offers to return to the Renegades, was the teamÂ’s third leading receiver, hauling in 41 balls for 608 yards and four touchdowns. He was also the team leader in all-purpose yards (2,306), third in yards from scrimmage (625) and tops in kickoff return yards (700), punt return yardage (821) and missed field goal return yards (four for 160).

In the return categories, Armstead ranked third in punt returns and sixth in kickoff returns.

The former star at Ole Miss continued to improve as the year went on. After a quiet start, ArmsteadÂ’s electrifying catches and returns led to a four-game streak of consecutive touchdowns. On October 9, at home against Saskatchewan, he had 317 all-purpose yards.

“Getting Jason back was important for us and we’re happy about having him in uniform for at least the next two years,” said Renegades head coach and GM Joe Paopao. “He showed last season that he has the ability to be an exciting player and we’re confident he will continue to be a solid player and citizen for the Renegades in the years to come.”
