Jared Smith\'s Gem Carries Cardinals Past Hammerheads, 3-1

Jupiter, FL – Jared Smith (2-4) threw six scoreless innings and Blake Blasi had two hits to help the Cardinals defeat the Hammerheads Friday night at Roger Dean Stadium. Smith allowed just three hits and three walks over six innings, and also struck out three to win for the second time this season. Matt Hammons picked up his fifth save of the season, and his third in three days.

Jim Kavourias had two hits and scored a run for Jupiter, coming home from second base on a fly ball to right by Jose Santos. Cardinal right fielder Al Benjamin bobbled the ball and had to dive to hold on to it, allowing Kavourias to go for home. Steve Kent (2-1) took the loss for Jupiter, allowing two runs on six hits in five and two-thirds innings. Kent walked four and also threw a wild pitch.

Blasi scored once to go with two hits, and Tony Garcia and Chase Voshell each scored once. Gabe Johnson and Andy Shutzenhofer picked up RBIs for the Cards.

Jupiter and Palm Beach play again on Saturday night with the Cardinals acting as the home team beginning at 7:05 PM. Justin Pope, who had been scheduled to start for Palm Beach on Saturday, was traded by the St. Louis Cardinals to the New York Yankees for Sterling Hitchcock.
