Jamieson 'Sticks' to Anti-Bullying Campaign
January 13, 2012 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Rochester Knighthawks News Release
(Rochester, January 13)... Sports fans all own cherished mementos of their favorite players, from a signed bat or stick, to an autographed jersey or hat. On Saturday, January 21 st, lacrosse fans will have a chance to add a one-of-a-kind piece of Rochester Knighthawks' history, while helping a great cause in the process.
Rochester Knighthawks forward Cody Jamieson will donate a game-used stick to raise awareness and funds for the Hurricanes Lacrosse "We Got Your Back" anti-bullying campaign. The Reebok 10K was used by "Jammer" in both preseason wins and helped the second-year pro collect 12 points. Unlike most athletes who would keep the stick out of superstition, Jamieson understands the importance of donating his stick.
"Too many kids are being bullied and taking it to the extreme. I hope it raises awareness about a problem that affects all of us," said the Rochester forward. Jamieson has taken a stand against an epidemic that 56 percent of all students have witnessed taking place at school and 71 percent of students consider ongoing problem, according to bullyingstatistics.org. "We all know someone close to us that has had to deal with the issue whether we know it or not. It is something that needs to be addressed more."
The Hurricanes will sell $1.00 raffle tickets in the upper atrium lobby when gates open until the end of the third quarter on Saturday, January 21 st . The Knighthawks Charitable Foundation, Inc. will donate the net proceeds to the lacrosse organization's anti-bullying effort. The Knighthawks' home opener is set for 7:30 p.m. against the Buffalo Bandits at The Blue Cross Arena. Jamieson will select the winner on the turf after the game.
In November, Jamieson and his teammates signed the Hurricanes' anti-bullying pledge. The slogan, "We Got Your Back," was developed by Hurricanes' Team Coordinator Anne Marie Leonardi and is present on the team's bracelets. All 115 kids and 16 coaches in the youth lacrosse organization signed the pledge to signify that the Hurricanes will "stand up against bullying and our teams will not stand for it."
"I felt with all the kids in our program, if we can make a difference in one kid's life it's worth it," said Leonardi. "I told the kids, not only do you have your teammates back on and off the field, but you should also look out for the kid who might not have the 'cool' shoes or who are different or have different beliefs."
Leonardi was excited to learn about the fundraiser developed by Jamieson. The 24 year old from Six Nations has taken an active role in the Rochester community since getting selected first overall in the 2010 NLL Entry Draft.
"We are happy to have the Knighthawks and Cody Jamieson join us in this cause. This is a cause we have been fighting for two years now and are glad our word is spreading," said Leonardi. "We would like to invite any other organizations or members of our community to contact us to sign our pledge. The more people that join will help us stop this unfortunate growing problem."
To join the effort against bullying and support the Hurricanes, go to www.greecehurricanes.com or contact Anne Marie Leonardi at (585) 746-3779. To take part in the raffle and witness the Knighthawks' 2012 home opener, fans can purchase tickets at all Ticketmaster outlets, ticketmaster.com, and at The Blue Cross Arena Box Office or by calling 1-800-745-3000.
