Richmond Kickers News Release
RICHMOND, VA â (Thursday, May 27, 2004) â Currently ranked first in the A-League standings, the Richmond Kickers (3-2-3, 12 points) take on the Virginia Beach Mariners (2-2-2, 8 points) this Saturday, May 29th at 7:00 p.m. at the University or Richmond Stadium. The Kickers last met the Mariners at Virginia Beach where Richmond came away with a 2-0 win.
Following tonight's match, the Kickers will travel to the Virginia Beach Mariners on Monday, May 31st at 6:00 p.m. in the last leg of this year's James River Cup competition, a local derby that has been in existence for six seasons. The winner of the James River Cup is based on total points at the end of all regular season matches played between the two teams. The Kickers are the defending 2003 James River Cup Champion and have won the competition consistently for the past five seasons (1998-2000, 2002-2003).
"We are looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss last week and Virginia Beach is always a difficult encounter," says Richmond Kickers head coach Leigh Cowlishaw. "We need the points and are looking for two wins this week."
Under Suspension
Richmond's Richie Williams will not be eligible to play in tonight's match versus the Mariners due to a red card on a dissention call in last week's game versus Atlanta. He will return to the Kickers lineup when Richmond travels to Virginia Beach on Monday, May 31st.
Players to Watch
Kickers: Goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale (#22) is currently ranked fourth in the league with a goals against average of 0.680. He is ranked first in the league in saves with 49 in eight games played and is tied for third in shutouts with three. The continued solid defense of Kevin Knight (#3) and Peter Luzak (#25) has contributed to Pascale's shutouts and both defenders have played every minute of every match so far this season.
Mariners: Defender Jeremy Aldridge (#4) received Team of the Week honors for last week's game winning goal in the 2-1 overtime win over Atlanta. Forward Dante Washington (#9) and Jakob Fenger (#11) are leading the Mariners in points with four.
