Saskatchewan Roughrider General Manager/Vice President of Football Operations Eric Tillman announced today they have signed import running back Jamal Robertson to a one-year plus an option contract. Financial details of the signing were not released.

Robertson (5'9 - 215 lbs) began his pro career with the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe in 2002. After a stellar season with the Fire in which he was named the Offensive MVP of the League and set an NFL Europe record for the longest run from scrimmage (90-yard touchdown), he signed as a free agent with the San Francisco 49ers.

In 20 games with the 49ers, Robertson rushed for over 200 yards and had over 800 kickoff return yards. Midway through the 2004 season, Robertson joined the Carolina Panthers as their kick returner and finished the 2004 season near the top of the league with 840 kickoff return yards.

Robertson spent the entire 2005 season with the Carolina Panthers where he dressed in six regular season games. He signed as a free agent with the Atlanta Falcons in 2006, but was released prior to the season.

In 33 career NFL games, Robertson rushed 62 times for 248 yards and had 58 kickoff returns for 1,325 yards.

In 2001, Robertson spent the season on the Calgary Stampeders practice roster, backing up perennial all-star Kelvin Anderson.

Robertson attended Ohio Northern and finished his college career as the Polar Bears all-time leader with 4,169 rushing yards, 5,388 all-purpose yards, 56 touchdowns and 338 points scored. He was a two-time first-team All-America selection and was named Ohio Athletic Conference co-Offensive Player-of-the-Year as a senior after leading the nation with 2,308 all-purpose yards.

"Jamal is a talented and versatile back," stated Tillman. "He is very, very strong, plays with a low pad level and has great balance. As a result, Jamal makes a lot of positive yards after contact, knocking guys backwards, or simply breaking tackles. His ability to catch and his contributions in the return game are also big pluses. Jamal's experience in Calgary, behind the only back in CFL history to rush for 1,000 yards or more in eight consecutive seasons, will, of course, be a big benefit to him. He understands the many nuances of the CFL game, and, as such, will be far ahead of the learning curve."
