Jacks Start Home-Stand off Right

Odessa, TX - The Odessa Jackalopes returned home for the first game of a five game home-stand. Friday night's matchup was the first of the weekend against the Corpus Christi IceRays. In a much needed weekend, the Jacks were looking to break a four-game losing streak.

The first period was a scoreless one with lots of great opportunities. Both goaltenders played outstanding, as Corpus Christi's Vomacka saved all 11 shots, and Odessa's Jonny Hogue saved all 8 he saw.

Into the 2nd period, still scoreless, it was the Jacks that got on the board first. Ryan MacKellar dumped a puck across the ice into the corner for Tyler Pietrowski. Pietrowski saw space to skate in front of the net and sniped a shot past Vomacka for the 1-0 lead.

6 minutes later, Joe Kinsella was protecting his goaltender when a fight broke out. Kinsella had the upper hand as he laid a couple jabs into IceRays' big man, Brendan Miller. The fight resulting in 15 penalty minutes for each side.

With 27 seconds remaining in the 2nd period, David Baskerville lifted on over Jonny Hogue for the 1-1 tie game. Hogue thought he had the angle beat, but Baskerville proved otherwise on the game-tying shot.

The third period got rowdy, as the Jackalopes were playing three defensemen short. Jake Levin suffered a lower body injury in the 1st period, forcing him out for the rest of the game. Kinsella was in the penalty box for the first 4:30 of the period, and only 8 second into the 3rd period, Connor Stuart took a shot off the face. Stuart was able to return 10 minutes later, sporting a cage.

Bastien Maia and Ludwig Stenlund took their turns on defense, not allowing a goal in the process. The Jackalopes would go on the power play when Cooper Zech found Ludwig Stenlund who snapped one off past Vomacka for Stenlund's 3rd in as many games. This was also Cooper Zech's first game back, and he got an assist.

Exactly one minute later, Zach Heintz found a crashing Nick Wilson from the end line and a perfect pass into the slot allowed Wilson to wrist one into the open net past Vomacka for the Jackalopes two-goal lead.

Unfortunately, the extra attacker for Corpus Christi was too much for Odessa as the IceRays netted one more with just over a minute and a half remaining in the 3rd period, bringing it back within one. A flurry of chances were stopped by Hogue and his defense, en route to a 3-2 victory at home.

Ludwig Stenlund was named the number 3 star of the night with one goal. Jonny Hogue was named the 2nd star of the night for saving 32 of 34 shots and a Win. Tyler Pietrowski was named the 1st star of the night for having one goal and one assist.

The Jacks will be back at it again tomorrow night as they take on the IceRays for game 2 of 2 of the week.
